The story behind SCRAN

Scran is a brilliant old Scots word that’s long been used to describe cheap, tasty, and filling food—the kind that hits the spot without breaking the bank. But where did it come from?

There’s a popular myth that scran stands for “sultanas, currants, raisins and nuts”—a dried mix supposedly handed out to sailors to fend off scurvy. It’s a fun tale, but sadly, it’s pure fiction.

The real story is a bit grittier. Back in the 18th century, scran was slang for a bar tab—or as one 1725 dictionary put it, “a reckoning at a boozing-ken.” By the 1800s, it had evolved into a verb: to scran meant spending your pocket money on sweets or snacks. If you were “out on the scran,” you were likely begging for food, often collecting scraps in a “scran bag.”

Historically, scran referred to leftovers, odds and ends, or low-quality grub—the kind of food you might cobble together after a night out. Some believe it may even be linked to the Icelandic word skran, meaning rubbish or odds and ends.

Eventually, the military adopted the term to mean rations or meals, and it stuck.

Historically, scran was about sharing what you had, even if it was just scraps. That spirit of generosity and community is exactly what we want to bring to our little takeaway.

Kia ora!

Our story began with a shared love of good food, good music, and good vibes. We met in 2022, fell fast, and tied the knot in 2023. Now, we’re chasing a dream together—opening a cosy takeaway that feels like home.

Lucy (22) – Born and raised in Fife, Scotland, Lucy grew up in the heart of her family’s takeaway shop, where the smell of fresh haggis and tattie scones was part of daily life. From scrubbing pans to serving customers, she’s done it all—and always dreamed of running her own place. Since moving to New Zealand, she’s missed the hearty, comforting food of home. With years of hospitality experience under her belt, she’s ready to bring those flavors to life here in New Zealand.

Raukawa (26) – A Waikato local with a big heart and a smooth playlist. Raukawa’s love for R&B, funk, and soul is only matched by his passion for great food and community. During a trip to Scotland, he not only fell in love with Lucy’s world—but also with the iconic Scottish curry sauce. That trip sparked the foundation of ‘Scran’. By bringing Raukawa’s background in trades, customer service and natural handyman skills he’s the steady hand behind the scenes—and the one making sure the music’s always just right.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and neither does the word scran. It’s humble, a little cheeky, and full of character—just like us.
